What is needed to ride a Motorcycle in Kansas (KS)?
You’ll need to have a Kansas driver’s license before you can add a motorcycle endorsement to your license. Once you’re ready to take the tests, you must present proof of identity at any Kansas driver’s license exam station, and pass a vision test, a motorcycle written test, and a skills test. The Kansas Motorcycle Operator Manual provides the information you’ll need for the knowledge test.
If you have successfully completed an approved motorcycle driver’s education course, you can present your completion certificate instead of taking the on-cycle road test.
Skills Test
You’ll be tested on your basic vehicle control and your ability to avoid crashes. The test determines your ability to handle normal as well as hazardous situations. Items you may be tested on include:
- Ability to adjust speed depending on the traffic situation
- Knowledge of the motorcycle and your riding limitations
- How well you stop, turn and swerve
- Ability to make critical decisions
- If you choose the correct path and stay within boundaries
- Whether you communicate well with other drivers
- Your ability to make critical decisions and execute them
Fees
Class M fees are in addition to regular license fees. The class M fee for any four-year license (including commercial) is $9. The Class M fee for a six-year license is
$12.50.
