Motorcycle Helmets!

The most important protective item you will ever purchase is your helmet. When buying a helmet you want to make sure that it fits snugly, is comfortable, and easy to see out of. Not only are helmets legally required almost everywhere you will ride your motorcycle they also provide the comforting knowledge that you are doing everything you can to protect your head in an accident.

I fully support shopping around for a good deal on helmets, especially online but I always suggest not sacrificing quality for a small amount of savings. One trick that I’ve used before is to go in to a local Motorcycle shop and tried on various brands and sizes until I know which one’s I like and how the sizes fit depending on brand, then you can start your search for the best deal online for that specific model or brand.

Motorcycle Jackets!

Next up for protective riding gear we have Jackets. While the jacket is technically not the most important piece of gear you wear it does play a big part in protecting you as well as making your ride comfortable by helping keep you dry and controlling your body temperature.

When it comes to Jackets you have to make a few initial decisions as there are different materials and styles to choose from:

  1. Leather Jackets: Typically the first type that a person thinks of when you start looking for motorcycle gear. They come in many variations, here are a few:
    • Traditional: All leather jacket like the olden days circa easy rider. Maximum protection of the Jacket choices.
    • Vented: An all leather jacket that has areas with openable (usually by zipper) vents for cooling in hotter months.
    • Insulated: Basically a tradition leather jacket with insulation added for those colder months. (sometimes in the form of a removable inner liner)
    • Hybrid: This style jacket is a good all around choice. Is made of a leather jacket with areas of breathable textile/Kevlar for venting and impact protection
  2. Textile Jackets: Very popular for riders that tend to only ride in warmer months or climates. They come in many variations, here are a few:
    • Full Textile: The basic textile jacket, normally made up of a Kevlar/mesh material with padding in the major areas. This jacket is very breathable, though you sacrifice some protection for that benefit. Also not typically very useful in the rain.
    • Hybrid: This style jacket is a good all around choice. Is made of a leather jacket with areas of breathable textile/Kevlar for venting and impact protection
    • Insulated: Basically a Textile jacket with insulation added for those colder months. (sometimes in the form of a removable inner liner). While not as warm or rain proof as the leather version, it does provide warmth for the late spring and early fall riding if you only want to buy one jacket.

As with the helmets, I suggest buying online for the best deal on jackets. Most sites provide sizing charts, and jackets fit pretty similar to a sweatshirt sizing, and a little tighter is better than loose.

Riding Gloves!

Up now are Gloves, I never ride without gloves they protect arguably the second most important part of your body, for most of us we can not make a living without them. So why not make sure they’re protected in the case of an accident?

I have gone down on my bike before and because of my gear I walked away with only a couple of bruises and scratches. Because of that I now fully support wearing gear every time you ride even if it’s just down the street.

There are many styles and types of gloves available so I’m not going to go in to every one but rather give a couple of pointers and recommendations:

  • Try to choose a glove that goes past your wrist and partially up your forearm for maximum protection (I like the gauntlet styles)
  • Try hybrids with leather palms and knuckle protection but venting on top to keep you hands from overheating in the warm months
  • choose a style that you like so you have no reasons not to wear gloves every time you go for a ride

As with my other suggestions I buy all my gear online for the best deals, lately I’ve been using Motorcycle Superstore which you can check out and get a discount through our site now.

Other Riding Gear!

Other gear that I highly recommend checking out includes:

  1. Riding Boots: Normal shoes won’t protect anything in the event of a crash, why cheap out on the part of your body needed to walk? Stick with boots higher than the ankle to provide maximum protection.
  2. Riding Pants: Riding specific pants including riding jeans are awesome, they provide warmth, protection and movement. Most have stretchable section to help keep you comfortable on even the longest days.
  3. Armor: Especially if you ever plan to try stunting or ride in high traffic areas, extra padded body armor is always a bonus

Hopefully now you’re prepared for the worst and have picked up the necessary safety gear because of this post, I hate to hear about fellow riders that have gone down and been seriously injured when a few pieces of protective gear could have saved them…

On a lighter note, happy riding and get looking for some new gear!!

Don’t forget to check out Motorcycle Superstore for their good deals.
